The CarDependability Index

Check any car’s dependability grade.

The CarDependability Index (CDi) turns federal owner-complaint records into a plain letter grade and a 0–100 score for thousands of model years — measured against how common each vehicle is, so a best-seller isn’t punished for its volume. No opinions, no manufacturer placement: just the numbers.

How the Index works

1

Complaints, in context

Federal (NHTSA) owner complaints, measured against how common each vehicle is.

2

First three years

The graded figure counts a model-year’s first three years, so every year is measured over the same window.

3

Recalls kept separate

Recalls are shown on every page but never folded into the grade — a recall is a fix, not a verdict.

4

0–100 and a letter

Each model-year gets a plain letter grade and a 0–100 score. Some figures are estimated, and we say where.

5

Early vs. Long-Term

The grade uses the Early CDi; a separate Long-Term CDi shows every complaint on record.

Two scores, one clear picture

Early CDi

The grade

A letter grade (A–F) and a 0–100 score based on a model-year’s first three years — the fairest way to compare one year against another.

Long-Term CDi

The long view

A complaints-per-1,000 rate with a plain band (Excellent to Well below average) covering every complaint on record, for owners thinking long-term.
