Hyundai and Genesis Recall Nearly 95,000 Sedans: Park Outside, No Fix Yet

Just in time for colder weather, owners of nearly 95,000 Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans are being told to park outside. The guidance stems from a recall involving power-seat motors that can overheat and cause a fire while driving or parked. A repair is not yet available.

Affected vehicles include certain 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017–2020 Genesis G80 sedans. Owners should check their vehicle identification number now, rather than wait for a notification letter. Hyundai advises parking affected cars outdoors, away from buildings and other vehicles, until the recall repair is completed.

What Causes the Hyundai Genesis Fire Recall?

According to Hyundai’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an outside impact can damage or dislodge the slider and height-adjustment switch on a front power seat without memory settings.

The damaged switch can stay engaged, allowing the seat motor to run continuously, even after someone leaves the vehicle. Extended operation can overheat the motor and increase the chance of a fire. Possible warning signs include a burning smell near the seat or seat controls that stop working.

The recall includes 54,644 Hyundai Genesis sedans and 39,978 Genesis G80 sedans, for a total of 94,622 vehicles. At the time it decided to recall the vehicles, Hyundai knew of two alleged fires in the United States. It reported no related crashes or injuries.

Park Outside While Waiting for a Repair

Owners of affected Hyundai and Genesis sedans should park outdoors, away from other vehicles and structures, until repairs are completed. A garage is not an appropriate parking location under these instructions. The fire risk exists even when the vehicle is parked.

Hyundai is developing the remedy. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 7, 2026, but that date does not establish when repairs will become available. Once available, the recall repair will be free, including for vehicles whose original warranty has expired.

Owners can review NHTSA’s recall information under campaign number 26V664000 and check their vehicle identification number to see whether it is included in the Hyundai Genesis fire recall.

Hyundai owners can call 855-371-9460, referencing recall 308. Genesis owners can call 844-340-9741, referencing recall 035G. Ask about the current repair status and any further instructions for your vehicle. Until the repair is performed, follow the park-outside precautions.
